From 2-4 October, the Unahotels complex in San Lazzaro di Savena (BO) will host the 4th edition of ‘More than neurons’, a scientific event that this year will focus on the theme ‘The neuroscience of cancer’. Researchers from all over the world will come together to discuss the latest findings on how the brain and cancer interact.
This conference is a unique opportunity to take stock of the latest research in a rapidly evolving scientific field. Combining the expertise of neurobiologists, oncologists, immunologists and pharmacologists, researchers are working together to unravel the mysteries of how the brain and cancer interact and to develop new, more effective and less invasive therapies. The following topics will be explored in depth:
- The brain that ‘feeds’ the tumour: how can the nervous system stimulate tumour growth and promote its spread to other parts of the body?
- The tumour ‘tricking’ the brain: the mechanisms by which tumours can alter brain function, causing symptoms such as pain, convulsions and cognitive difficulties will be presented
- New weapons against cancer: status of the latest research on molecules that can interfere with the interaction between brain and tumour
- The impact of cancer treatments on the brain: the consequences that cancer treatments can have on the brain and strategies to prevent them will be addressed.
In particular, a number of researchers from the University of Bologna operating at the laboratories of the IRET Foundation and the Bologna-Ozzano Technopole will be taking part in the various sessions:
- Wednesday 2/10 at 7.15 p.m., Dr. Corinne Quadalti with ‘Brain metastasis in a model of canine haemangiosarcoma: investigating the role of miRNAs;
- Friday 4/10 at 9.00 a.m., Prof. Calzà with ‘How to prevent chemobrain: a systematic preclinical study to support predictive models for human patients’;
- Friday 4/10 at 9.45 a.m., Dr. Vito Antonio Baldassarro with ‘Vulnerability of white matter to chemotherapy drugs: focus on oligodendrocytes and oligodendrocyte precursor cells’.
